The Naked Truth Project
How to Start the Greening Process
We understand that reducing toxins from your life can be very overwhelming – every time you turn around, you’re learning about something else that is “bad for you.” We want to give you a few tips to help you get started, so the process hopefully won’t be so daunting.

We feel that the key element to successfully protecting yourself from toxins is to educate yourself – which you are doing by reading this website! True, there are a lot of toxins out there that can potentially damage your health. But instead of being afraid of them, learn about their effects and how to avoid them without inconveniencing your life. If you think about reducing toxins as some sort of a punishment or a chore, your changes probably won’t stick. Try instead to think of it in terms of doing something healthy for yourself…just because it’s good for you. Once you have that positive frame of mind – once you’ve decided that you want to make changes in order to prevent future illnesses and remain healthy – then keep on reading!
#1 Redefine "Environment"
A lot of times when people hear the word “environment,” they think of it as something that’s “out there” somewhere. It means endangered species, clear cut forests, and conserving land. When you believe that the environment is something that’s outside of your everyday world, it’s easy to also believe that it doesn’t affect you.

The Naked Truth Project, on the other hand, defines “environment” as the places where you live, work, and play. We care about the places that you put yourself everyday. Can problems in your personal environment include pesticide spraying, air pollution, global warming, incinerators, and other more classic environmental problems? Of course. But it doesn’t have to. We’re trying to tell you that there are toxins in your environment that can be “cleaned up” regardless of your geographic location. A person who lives next to farmland can use the same chemical-based cleaning products as someone in a high-rise apartment in a large city. Get our point?

Once you start thinking about “the environment” as the places you actually are everyday, you’ll realize that you have more control over “environmental problems” than you think. You can become an activist in your own little micro-environment, and not only will you and your family be healthier, but you’ll be contributing to the improved health of the planet. Remember that little saying “Think Globally, Act Locally?” Well, there’s a lot of truth to that. We at The Naked Truth Project believe that little old you can make a difference. A big one.
#2 Think about Synergy and Bioaccumulation
Huh? Yeah, you might be asking yourself what the heck we’re talking about. Well here’s the quick recap:

Remember back on the home page when we told you that there are 80,000 chemicals currently in use with little to no testing done on the majority of them? Well, that’s just referring to how many individual chemicals have been tested for their affects on human health. So now guess how many chemicals have been tested in combination with other chemicals. Yep you guessed it – zero. There’s no testing done on how chemicals affect human health when in combination with each other…and with 80,000 different chemicals you can certainly come up with a lot of different combinations. We feel that this is a great concern, since oftentimes chemicals work synergistically with each other, which means that their combined effect is greater than the sum of their individual effects. For example, two different chemicals may have a minimal effect when you’re exposed to them individually…but together they may react with each other to have a very great effect.

While we’re talking about multiple chemicals, here’s the scoop about bioaccumulation. The idea behind that is that chemicals are often persistent in the environment and can build up (or accumulate) in our bodies by storing themselves in our fat cells. Our bodies can only detoxify so much in a day and what it can’t get rid of just hangs around. If you’re exposed to 10 chemicals everyday (in your products, at work, in your food, etc.) and your body can only get rid of 80% of them each day, over time all the leftover 20 percents will build up. And that’s when illness happens.

One idea that is very important to understand is that while there can be some serious effects from an acute, one-time chemical exposure (like a pesticide spraying), the larger concern is often about the effects of several long-term, low-dose exposures. Preventing illness in the long term is one reason why it is so important to reduce your exposure to toxins now, when you’re healthy. For example, if someone eats one conventional apple that was sprayed with pesticides, chances are not very likely that a tumor will develop in him or her immediately and he or she probably won’t have instantaneous neurological problems. But in 10 years, if that same person gets diagnosed with cancer or Parkinson’s Disease, the accumulation of the pesticides on all of the foods that he or she has eaten in his or her life could definitely be a key culprit in the development of the disease.

We’re not trying to say that toxins are the cause of every disease out there that everyone has, but we do believe that one’s environment, products, and food sources should be examined when exploring health issues, just like diet, exercise, and stress levels are. There are so many toxins that have been linked with several extremely prevalent diseases in our society…so why not eliminate that one factor by avoiding toxins as much as you can?
#3 Realize that Being “Green” Is Not Inconvenient
The days when being “green” meant taking out another mortgage on your house just to buy cleaning products that don’t really clean, or traveling an hour to the only store in the state that sells organic carrots, ARE OVER! There are now many brands of natural and organic foods, products, building materials, clothes – you name it – and a lot of mainstream stores are even beginning to sell them.

So you have your choice of high-quality brands, you can buy them in the same stores you already shop at, you can make your own products from really cheap ingredients, and the price of “green” products are sometimes only slightly more expensive than conventional products…so as far as we can see there’s no reason why someone wouldn’t go green. Come on – all the cool kids are doing it.
#4 Start with Five Changes
This is a very important tip and we recommend that you read this one sentence (and hopefully the entire paragraph) about 50 times before you even look at our Consumer Product Guide so that it really sinks in. Here goes:
Nobody lives a completely toxin free life and you won’t be able to either.

Now take a huge sigh of relief because we just totally took the pressure off of you. We’re not saying that you shouldn’t try to live toxin-free, but you’re never going to be able to totally rid your life of them because we live in a chemical-based society. You may have a completely natural home, but who knows what your neighbor is spraying on his lawn that’s blowing into your backyard. So you do as much as you can do in the areas that you do have control over, and applaud all of your efforts because doing anything is better than doing nothing at all.

And besides, you’re probably not going to want to rid yourself of every single thing that contains toxins, right? That’s okay and you’re not alone – we all have a few of those guilty little pleasures that we just can’t imagine giving up. Don’t believe us? Well, check out our Staff & Directors page to see the “not-so-green guilty pleasures” of TNTP. Hey, we’re human too! We’re not saying that we condone doing all kinds of things that you know are bad for you, others, and the planet just because you don’t want to give them up, but if you try to change everything at once it’ll probably feel like a punishment and you might be less apt to stick with it all.

So what do you do then?

Look through this website and come up with an entire list of things that you “should” change in your personal environment. Take a deep breath and resist judging yourself. Then pick out five things that would be no sweat to replace with natural alternatives and start there. Once those five things become second nature, pick five more that may be a little more challenging; a little more of a sacrifice. And then pick five more. Once you get on a roll you might even realize that you don’t even need some of the things you consume regularly. Continue chipping away at it until you’ve made all the changes on your list. That might take you a lifetime, and that’s okay as this is an ongoing journey and you will be continually learning. But if you get to the end of your list and you have three little guilty pleasures left on there, no worries – you’ll still be A-OK in our book!
#5 Tell Other People
Now that you're thrilled with all of the changes you've made, tell other people about it. Let your friends know how much you love your new organic shampoo. Tell your mom about how much better your asthma is now that you've gotten rid of air fresheners. Tell your brother that he can eat organic and still be a carnivore...and the burgers will even taste better!

Seriously though, if these changes have made a positive impact on your life then spread the word. You have no idea what symptoms people are silently struggling with -- they may really need to hear what you've learned.
